Sigma VIG proudly supports the project “Impact of Walking and the Otago Exercise Program on Improving Balance in the Elderly,” an initiative developed by professors from the Sports University of Tirana. As the first program of its kind in Albania and the Balkans, this project introduces the internationally recognized Otago Exercise Program to adults aged 65+, with a special focus on the residents of the Tirana Elderly Care Home.
The initiative addresses the needs of a vulnerable group, composed mainly of individuals with low pensions, limited mobility, and minimal family support. The Otago Exercise Program—created by the University of Otago in New Zealand—is a structured, evidence-based training method designed to reduce falls and increase strength, balance, and overall mobility in older adults.
From February to April 2024, a group of 24 participants engaged in a 12-week program including:
-
Otago balance and resistance training sessions
-
Outdoor walking activities around Tirana’s Artificial Lake
-
Rhythmic dance sessions to improve strength, stability, and coordination
The project aimed to improve balance parameters by 30–40%, significantly lowering the risk of falls, which remain one of the leading causes of injury and mortality in elderly individuals. The program included warm-up routines, lower-limb strengthening exercises, progressive balance drills, and recovery exercises—combined with social and cognitive engagement through walking and rhythmic movement.
Throughout the project, Sigma VIG provided continuous support, offering transportation, sports equipment, and healthy snacks to participants. This partnership reflects Sigma VIG’s commitment to social responsibility, active aging, and initiatives that improve the physical and emotional wellbeing of Albania’s senior community. The success of this project proves that meaningful change is possible when organizations invest in inclusive, community-focused initiatives. By empowering older adults through safe physical activity, this collaboration helps enhance quality of life and builds a stronger, healthier society.
